Personal Evangelism

What is it

Personal Evangelism is living one's life as an example of the Christian Gospel and inviting others to accept Jesus as their Lord and Master. To put in into modern language it is walking the walk and talking the talk.

Background

St. Francis of Assisi said "Preach the Gospel all the time and if necessary use words." We are told by the some communications experts that a large percentage of our communications through body language. Then a large percentage of our evangelism should be done through body language. Our Lord's covenant with the Church is stated in the Great Commission. (Matthew 28: 18-20) The Great Commission focuses on the word "Go." The Great Commission does not say preach and teach but to walk beside and witness. If our witness is largely body language then people should be able to see Jesus reflected in our lives and ask, "I want whatever your have."

Evangelism is not about sanctification but about redemption. That is to say evangelism is not about living Holy lives but about taking the saving power of the Cross to the entire world. Because the Brotherhood is a ministry and a ministry is about serving the congregation and the surrounding community, the evangelism effort for the Chapter is to the community were we live - to the people across the back fence, beside us, across the street and across the parking lot. The people needing to be evangelized are close-by and probably are our neighbors.

Where to begin

The first effort of learning about Personal Evangelism should begin in the Chapter Meeting. The allows each Brother Andrew to begin to witness to each other. Since we haven't been taught this earlier in life, this is a scary idea. The Brotherhood may not have all the answers or knowledge of how to solve all the problems facing of the Church in bringing men to Christ. We may not have the answers but we believe that we have been commissioned to try. One lesson that has been learned is that the ministry to men can be most effective by other men who have learned to witness to how the faith in Jesus Christ has become a more meaningful part of their life in relationships at home, at work, and in the world.

This personal evangelism is where it is very important for the Chapter Officers to take a leadership role - witnessing your faith in Jesus Christ and the application of your faith in your daily life. Witnessing is not as difficult as it sounds. The witnessing can be incorporated into the Chapter meetings and other Brothers Andrew will quickly learn just how easy it is. It is recommended that the witnessing be in the context of each member having the opportunity respond to the following questions:

  • Since our last meeting, how did you sense God reaching out to you in your daily life?
  • Since our last meeting, have you had a response to your personal prayer?
  • Since our last meeting, how have you tried to apply your Christian faith at home? At work? In the world?
  • Since our last meeting, what have you done to help spread Christ kingdom among men?

Not all questions need to be answered by every Brother Andrew, nor do all the questions have to be used at each meeting. However, these or similar questions should be incorporated into each Chapter meeting following the opening devotions. The success of Personal Evangelism will depend initially on the Chapter Officers being prepared to offer a response to the question used at the Chapter meeting.

How can one incorporate Personal Evangelism into their lives?

A effective way to perform Personal Evangelism is while you are performing your service projects. It has been stated that men communicate best side by side while doing something. Use this time to witness to each other or to people outside the Chapter who are working with you and ask them how their relationship with our Lord and Savior is progressing. The more you witness in this way the more impact you will have on each other as well as on your community.

Conversion is not an event that happens all at once but a process that comes from walking together along the path to Jesus.
