LAPSED OR NON-ATTENDING MEMBERS

GENERAL DISCUSSION

To provide some helpful suggestions to assist in getting lapsed (non-attending) chapter members back into active status.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

A common problem in many chapters is the loss of members who had been actively attending and participating in chapter meetings and programs. Sometimes the reason is simply a conflict of meeting times. More often it can be related to a basic lack of communications. Another reason might be that the chapter has lost its focus on the Brotherhood purpose: a ministry to men.

Having boring and uninteresting meetings with no challenge to complete the fulfillment of the Discipline of Service will often cause loss of interest. Whatever the reason, there are courses of action to remedy the situation and, at the same lime, serve to strengthen the chapter and its effectiveness.

HOW IT WORKS

Once the chapter recognizes that there are members who no longer attend or participate in chapter projects. A plan of action should be implemented.

First determine the reason behind the lapsed member’s absence. Should there be two or three members with the same reasons for their lack of participation, it should be readily apparent that some changes should be considered.

Perhaps the lime or day of the week the chapter meets is the culprit. Sometimes nothing much can he done about this, but if several men fit into this category. The chapter might want to consider breaking into two separate groups with each group having its own meeting time or even forming two chapters if the parish is large enough to make this feasible.

Past experience shows that the real problem usually results from dull, uninteresting meetings that are unable to compete with many other activities such as Rotary, bowling, Full Gospel Business Groups, etc.

A review of the following sources of problems and suggested solutions might be helpful. A prayerful concerted effort seriously undertaken by the chapter membership will resolve the problem and get the chapter motivated to do what it can do best: Bring others into Christ’s Kingdom.

PROBLEM #1

Meeting times conflict with other commitments.

SOLUTION #1

When possible, change meeting time to resolve problem.

PROBLEM #2

Meetings are boring and uninteresting with no challenge.

SOLUTION #2

Prayerfully review meeting agenda with the following in mind:

· Time of meeting kept to agreed duration

· Devotional portion held in chancel

· Time set aside for Bible study

· Time set aside for sharing

· Business portion kept to 15 minutes or less

· Use VCR Bible study for programs occasionally

· Be sure all members get a chance to share in conversations

PROBLEM #3

No Service project available for participation

SOLUTION #3

Not every man will be interested in taking part in certain chapter projects set up to fulfill the Discipline of Service. Thus the chapter officers should meet and plan two or three endeavors of an evangelistic nature that will provide a meaning for the chapter’s existence.

For example, visiting the sick and shut-ins is always worthwhile and much appreciated. Be sure this is coordinated with the rector. Scheduling a special Saturday Eucharist and lunch for the homebound or nursing home parishioners (with arranged transportation) can be a rewarding experience. Perhaps linking up with the ‘Big Brothers’ organization might be feasible.

Remember doing painting, repairs, mowing lawns, etc., are things we all might be doing as responsible Churchmen, but should not be considered a fulfillment of our Discipline of Service.
