SPONSOR FATHER/SON DINNER

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Sponsor and/or provide a meal and program for a parish Father and Son dinner or breakfast.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Father/Son dinners or similar event is not much in vogue at this point in time but it is a desirable and worthwhile event for a parish. More emphasis on family relationships is needed and the church should and can lead in doing so. A dinner or breakfast is relatively easy to do and good things can come from doing so. .For example, those who attend are possible prospects for the Brotherhood, ushering, choir and other activities. We believe it is advisable not to promote these things at the dinner but to contact people later by phone or some Sunday at Church. Be sure to include boys without fathers and get men without sons to sponsor them. If this goes well you might want to establish it as an annual event and get it on the parish calendar at an early date.

HOW IT WORKS

After the chapter agrees to sponsor this event it is essential to obtain the rector’s approval and to get it on the parish calendar. Select someone who is capable and willing to be chairman. He need not be a member of the chapter although members of the chapter should probably be on the working Committee. A date at least 3 months after the decision to do this is desirable in order to get early publicity started.

The following checklist of things to be done should be helpful:

Location: If some location other than the parish is selected be sure to make a reservation. If parish facilities are to be used be sure they are available on the date selected.

Line up program. This can be a secular program with an emphasis on sports. A speaker from the fellowship of Christian Athletes would be good. A program with some sort of contest might be good to build father/son relations. Give out simple prizes.

Select menu and price.

Publicity: Start publicity about two months ahead. Use all possible kinds in the parish. Work with Church School teachers and Youth group leaders.

Tickets: Sell tickets starting about one month ahead (mimeographed tickets will do).

Telephone Contacts: Have Brotherhood members telephone prospective people. Get a list of names from the rector, Membership Chairman or parish office.

Provide Name Badges.

Handouts: Provide a low cost “favor,” or handout if possible. The Brotherhood National Office may be able to make some suggestions if you write them.

Clean up: Be sure to arrange for cleanup

HOW TO GET STARTED
