MAINTAIN PARISH TRACT RACK

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Provide and/or keep a parish Tract Rack(s) stocked.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Most parishes have a Tract Rack of some kind. These are usually fairly well stocked although new tracts are not publicized. Tracts are usually designed to meet specific needs and are brief and inexpensive. The problem as we see it is to provide an adequate supply of all types of tracts and to publicize them adequately. Since racks are small, and usually are located near church entrances this is not a problem. The main things then are to call attention to the availability of tracts of various kinds and to keep racks well stocked.

NOTE: A well stocked and attractive Tract Rack can be a great asset and tool for an alive parish!

HOW IT WORKS

Keeping up with a Tract Rack(s) is usually the ministry of one or two persons. The following factors need to be considered.

Location: See that they are located where parishioners will see them regularly.

Attractiveness: “Packaging” is very important in today’s world.

Stocking: A good supply of tracts to meet many needs is important. Review the Episcopal Churches Forward Movement list of tracts available and discuss them with the rector.

Cost: Most people are willing to pay a moderate amount for tracts. A box should be provided for coins and this should be emptied each Sunday. A note to the effect that price should not be a factor if the person wanting a tract cannot pay for it. The parish could provide tracts free by inserting an item for this in the budget.

Publicity: New tracts should be publicized in the Sunday Bulletin and a list of all tracts available could be sent to the parish with the parish newsletter annually.

New Tract Needs: Parishioners should be invited to make suggestions about new tracts.

HOW TO GET STARTED

The rector can provide information about the present procedure and the person who handles the Tract Racks. If someone in the chapter or his wife, is moved to undertake maintaining the rack the thing to do is to talk it over with the rector. The chapter could provide a rack or additional racks if needed and an initial supply of tracts, as approved by the rector.
