PRISON VISITATION AND/OR WORSHIP

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

This “How To” is an abbreviation of a previous Brotherhood booklet “And Ye Visited Me.” The booklet, of course, gave more detail about this important activity. This is designed to help chapters and Brotherhood members organize an effort to visit prisons and similar institutions to bring Christ’s love to those inside. It can be used for men, women or youth, however, men relate better to other men and young men are needed to reach youth. What can be done is limited only by the interest and imagination of those who participate, especially the one who would organize this.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Christian work in institutions by Brotherhood members has received impetus in recent years, due primarily to the dedication of a number of members in various places. These men have devoted many hours to this work. It seems also that prison officials are being more cooperative, especially where the results have been good. It is most important that these officials, prison chaplains, and others who may be involved, be consulted and their cooperation solicited.

It needs to be recognized at the outset that this kind of ministry is not for every member, although men will be surprised at the fact that they can do this, if they have the desire. God will provide all that is needed. Most institutionalized people are not looking for sympathy but they do need and want understanding and Christian concern (love). They are willing to listen to those who have found meaning in life, who will help them become useful members of society and help them regain self-respect. Personal relationships with those doing the visiting and those inside are what makes the difference between success and failure.

HOW IT WORKS

After determining the needs of local institutions, through talks with officials and chaplains, the next step is recruiting members who are willing to try this. Other members of the parish could be invited to participate also; usually a definite time is set for a group to visit, for either visiting on a one-to-one basis or a group meeting of some sort where singing and Bible study and sharing could take place. It is important that a regular schedule be established and adhered to. At some stage, if the inmates so desire, a priest could be asked to accompany the group and hold a communion service. If the group meets outside before entering, prayers should be said. Material that might be distributed should be cleared with the prison authorities.

Things to say and do should be discussed with the authorities and the prison chaplain. There may be situations or problems that are presented to individuals that lay visitors cannot handle. These problems should be referred to the prison authorities, chaplain or your rector so that professional care can be provided. The results of a wrong decision could be disastrous. However, do not let such a possibility deter you, for the Lord will give you the guidance needed any time you ask Him.

NOTE: Do not contact prisoner’s families or others outside without first discussing this with the authorities. Include your priest in planning and visiting if possible.

If funds are needed for materials, the Brotherhood Chapter, as a whole or the parish, could be asked to help out. Do not let the lack of funds initially deter you from going ahead. God will provide the needed funds if you ask.

HOW TO GET STARTED

After deciding to go ahead with a prison visitation program and settling the details with the prison, a “training” program should be set up. This might involve one or more sessions with the prison chaplain and other authorities to learn the do’s and don’ts. It is probably best to start with a minimum number of men rather than trying to recruit a large number in the beginning. This way, any problems can be worked out and the experience of those visiting will be helpful in recruiting others.

As mentioned previously, prayer is the key to success. Ask each chapter member, whether they will participate or not, to keep this venture in their daily prayers. Expect the Lord to open any doors necessary and to provide whatever is needed and He will.
