TRANSPORTATION TO CHURCH

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Provide transportation to church for those who need it.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

There are usually a few people in all parishes, mostly elderly, who are not able to drive and who cannot attend church services unless someone gives them a ride. In some cases, public transportation or relatives can fill this gap, but many times they cannot. Such people may ask for help once or twice but they are embarrassed to keep asking and not likely to continue doing so. Sometimes this is a temporary situation but usually it is a long time need. The biggest problem in getting rides for them is that people who can drive and bring them do not wish to be tied down to doing so every week or to start from home much earlier in order to do this. However, we believe the need is great and that a number of people can be led to provide transportation, at least on an every-other-Sunday basis. What is needed basically is a focus on this need and someone who is persistent and faithful to coordinate it.

HOW IT WORKS

The project is simple once it is set up with particular drivers having particular “non-drivers” to help, getting drivers to commit themselves on a continuing basis and to aadvise the coordinator of their inability to continue in the task when this occurs. We suggest that two drivers be assigned to work together to transport one non-driver or non-driver couple. The drivers should be allowed to work out their own schedule although it is probable that one of these drivers should be asked to take the initiative in setting this up. A schedule should be established so that a clear understanding is held by both drivers and the non-drivers. The coordinator should plan to check the non-drivers every three to four months to see that things are working out satisfactorily.

HOW TO GET STARTED

After determining that a probable need for transportation exists, by talking to the rector, and a chapter agreement to sponsor this, it is essential that one member agree to be the coordinator. The rector should be asked to speak about the need and the project publicized in bulletins and the parish news. Those needing transportation, as well as, those willing to provide transportation on an every-other Sunday approximately basis should be asked to contact the “Transportation Coordinator” or the rector. The coordinator should then try to line up two people who will agree to provide transportation for one person or couple. Those who will provide transportation should live in a reasonably close proximity or in the line of travel to those transported.
