MAINTAIN PARISH LIBRARY AND/OR BOOK STORE

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Provide books, booklets, etc. and coordinate a parish library and book store.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Many parishes and even mission churches have a library of some kind but few have a book store or an active program to keep books moving. In too many churches the library consists of some shelves of books parishioners have donated. Many of these books are excellent but some are questionable. People need to read good books, both classic and current, to improve their understanding and knowledge of the Christian faith. In many cases they need to discuss what they have read either because they have questions or unclear understanding. Therefore, the need for a competent parish Librarian (and assistants) is usually great. In larger parishes a book store can be profitable and provide the new books needed.

HOW IT WORKS

Library: Since many parish libraries exist, the main job is to publicize their availability and encourage parishioners to read. K librarian could and should provide a brief review of one book each month in a parish bulletin or newsletter. Parishioners should be encouraged to give feedback to the librarian. In view of the fact that people have a tendency to borrow and then “forget about” books they need to be given a limited time to read books and then followed up on if not returned. Parishioners should be encouraged to donate books they have or to cover the cost of new books. The opportunity to give books as memorials should not be overlooked.

Book Store: In parishes of 200 or more active parishioners a book store is probably practical. Some jewelry might be carried also. Books can be consignment, for less profit of course. We suggest that a glass display case be obtained and a few books gotten on consignment from a local Christian book store. All books obtained should be approved by the rector and read by the “book store” manager as soon as practical. The book store should be publicized and open at specific times on Sunday. It should also be helpful to have the book store managers name and telephone number displayed.

HOW TO GET STARTED

Most rectors would welcome someone to take over the parish library and/or book store and would give assistance in publicity. The primary need is for someone who has an interest in this ministry and who will give it faithful attention. The Brotherhood chapter could provide or obtain someone who would take this job on and then support him or her in whatever ways practical, especially in providing assistance in setting this up. Pray about finding someone who will take this on as a faithful ministry!
